A COSMETICS retailer has backed a York-based charity to the tune of £6,000.

Lush, the ethical cosmetic company which has a store in Coney Street, York, donated the cash to the John Lally International Foundation.

Set up in 2003 in memory of York environmentalist John Lally, who died in 1995, the foundation is raising money to fund its work in India.

The cash will help build an extension to two workshops on an existing school in Ramnagar, West Bengal, which will allow women to be employed in making environmentally friendly handicrafts for sale in Europe.

Gordon Campbell-Thomas, project advisor for the foundation, said: “This is fantastic news. It means we can proceed to put sustainable ideas into practice. The direct benefit will be felt in the village, where the people suffer from the effects of climate change and poverty related issues.

"John Lally International Foundation have been working in India for many years, we believe that with this Lush award we can move the sustainable development argument forward for others to copy.”

Rebecca Lush Blum, charitable giving manager at Lush, said: “We are delighted to support the John Lally International Foundation and the important work they do in India.”
