FOOTBALLERS from Dunnington Primary School are celebratring their sixth trophy of the year after triumphing at the York & District Schools’ Football Association Champions’ League for the first time.

The annual tournament is the culmination of the YDSFA season, with all the league champions, which this year also included Woodthorpe, Ralph Butterfield, Knavesmire, St Wilfrid’s, Heworth and Badger Hill, gathering for a round-robin championship contest.

The tournament began shakily for Dunnington as they shared the points with North Yorkshire champions Woodthorpe, before victories over Badger Hill and Heworth, 1-0 and 4-0 respectively, brought them back into contention.

Dunnington then faced a crunch encounter with York Cade Trophy champions Knavesmire which, after a tense affair, ended in 0-0.

Charlie Cresswell went closest to breaking the deadlock with an early shot from the half-way line.

Charlie Ford then got Dunnington back to winning ways after his finish earned a much-needed win over St Wilfrid’s.

Knavesmire and Dunnington were still in contention to lift their first Champions’ League trophy after Knavesmire beat Woodthorpe 1-0 in their final game.

That meant Dunnington needed victory over Ralph Butterfield to bring home the silverware.

Dunnington did not falter under pressure and, following a team goal finished off by Zans Andrijanovs, they managed to hold on under immense pressure to take a 1-0 victory and with it the title.

Organiser Adam Cooper congratulated all the teams, adding: “This is the only tournament where everyone actually is a winner. The other winners were the crowd for witnessing such a spellbinding spectacle of football.”
