ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Henry Rice’s beaming face shows just what it means to him to have been presented with his village school’s inaugural Curtis Cup.
The Archbishop of York’s Junior School pupil received the cup for his commitment and determination as a runner. Henry, from Bishopthorpe, is thought to have run a total of 75 miles during his four years at the school.
It is a record of which Philip Curtis, the former school governor after whom the cup is named, would surely have approved.
Mr Curtis, an apparently fit and healthy father of three, died from heart failure after returning home from a run.
The cup was presented to Henry by Mr Curtis’s widow, Lisa, and his son, Joe. Making the presentation was a ‘deep honour’, Mrs Curtis said.
The annual cup is certainly a fine way to remember a man who gave so much to his community, both through his role as a school governor and as a fundraiser.
