THE future of Yorkshire's Film Archive will be debated in the House of Commons on Monday, after being raised by Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Phil Willis.

The MP said the archive, one of eight regional film archives, held over 14,000 reels of film dating back to the earliest days of film-making in the 1890s.

"The film archives have recently been viewed by thousands of Yorkshire residents in television programmes such ITV Yorkshire's The Way We Were and the BBC4 series Nation On Film, Mr Willis said.

"However, the YFA receives very little core funding and is dependent on significant levels of capital and specific project investment, particularly from Yorkshire Forward and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Its ongoing sustainability therefore remains a serious concern," he said.

Mr Willis said he would call for the Government to increase its core levels of funding and to press ahead with a national strategy for the film archive sector.
