IN-FORM Wigginton Bowls Club posted two wins to rack up eight straight victories in the York Amateur Bowling Association Men’s Evening League.
They first staged a spirited turnaround to beat hosts Stamford Bridge 75-70. Skip Mike Wadsworth’s rink trailed 22-4 at the midpoint but countered to lose only 25-19, while the rink led by Brian Hutton won 24-18.
Skip Dave Jervis’ rink lost by a single shot on the last end which left the match in the balance but the rink of skip Simon Ewing, having had a bad start, recovered to win 20-14 and collect six points.
The eighth win, accounting for hosts Minster at Clarence Gardens, put them into a clear lead in division three.
The clincher was led by the rink of Keith Ruddock, Graham Davies, Colin Ellis and skip Ewing who charged to an impressive 30-9 triumph, supported by the winning rinks of skips Jervis (20-14) and Hutton (17-14).
Maddison Cup holders, Colin Ellis’s’ ‘A’ team were unable to defend their title losing at home to Dringhouses ‘C’.
But in an-all Wigginton Coronation Cup duel, David Moorhouse’s ‘E’ team – led by skip Michael Wadsworth – overcame Tom Davies’ ‘D’ team to earn a semi-final tie against Osbaldwick ‘C’ at Copmanthorpe on Thursday, July 11.
Wigginton toppled Hovingham 90-51 in the BataGas Triples League, winning three rinks from skip Marjorie Watson (24-12), Jane Stockton (24-11) and Gary Stockton (23-8) to go third.
The winners of the club’s annual two-wood pairs competition for the Kilgour Trophy was Jean Millar and John Armstrong. Captain Michael Barlow and vice-captain Michael Wadsworth presented the trophy.
Wigginton remain leaders of the Tockwith League second division after ousting title rivals Tockwith 54-36 with all three rinks won by skips Huttton (21-10), Ellis (20-16) and Tony Baker (13-10).
