PUPILS at Knavesmire Primary School in York lay the first bricks for the third and final phase of the work to give them new classrooms.

The pupils were invited by builders William Birch & Sons Ltd to start off the work on the final phase of the project.

Site foreman Kevin Wheller said: “It’s been great working at the school and the pupils have been fantastic – so we were happy to invite the children to help.”

The building company invited the ten pupils – aged from five to eleven – to lay a brick in the front wall of the new school entrance.

Head teacher Adam Cooper said: “It’s a great opportunity for the pupils. As the school approaches its centenary, it’s very exciting for the children to think that in another 100 years’ time, people will be looking at the wall that they’ve built.”

Phase two of the work is due to be finished at the end of August, with the whole project due for completion in February.
