HISTORY has been seized in thrilling triplicate by the great Year 8 football team of Archbishop Holgate’s School.

The talented players became the first in the school’s history to win the York and District League championship, the County Cup and the York and District Cup.

The latter conquest was only achieved in the most heart-stopping of fashions to complete the historic hat-trick.

Up against Tadcaster in the final, the Archbishop aces were trailing to an early strike.

Parity was restored by leading marksman Dan Davison with his 28th goal in his 13th outing of the memorable term.

Then, in the very last minute of the campaign, an accurate free-kick was drilled in for the winner by Fergus McAughtrie, son of former York City defender David McAughtrie.

That timely strike sealed the treble after the championship crown had already been claimed and the County Cup captured with a 1-0 victory over Rossett High School, of Harrogate, at Harrogate Railway Athletic’s ground. The all-important goal was bagged by Davison, who is with York City’s centre of excellence.

Said Mark Wood, teacher of physical education at the school: “It has been a fantastic season.

“It’s the first time the treble has been done and the lads have been superb all season. They thoroughly deserve all the praise they get.”

And the glory march might yet gather more pace. The team will remain together next season in Year 9.
