YET again we hear of antisocial behaviour in the city centre (Street menace of city drinkers, The Press, June 18).

Perhaps if policemen and women were to patrol the centre again on foot, this might nip some if it in the bud.

Alas, you only see them when there is a football match, street march or a race day. Whilst they are patrolling, they could also stop all the cyclists riding the wrong way down one-way streets. Every time I go into town, I see several of them.

• I read that now people are complaining about drinking in York.

People want the police to do more, but it’s the council which gives the go-ahead for pubs to open. The police have to deal with the aftermath of any incident.

Plans went through recently for two extra pubs which the police had concerns about.

Anyone who gets drunk should be heavily fined and imprisoned if someone is attacked – and fined and charged for the ambulance and treatment if hospital treatment is needed.

Maybe knowing what the consequences are might bring down drinking problems and help fund the NHS.
