Fancy renting a character period property? Brian Page takes a look at a few available examples in and around York.

LAST time out we were looking at modern, contemporary properties.

This week we thought we would look at... yes, you guessed it, interesting period properties.

There are plenty of those in York, of course, so these are just a few examples of what our local letting agents have to offer.

We start with an absolutely beautiful country retreat at Little Worsaill, Husthwaite, a superbly-appointed period detached house with fantastic views across open countryside towards the famous White Horse.

Plenty of character touches here, including high ceilings, ornate cornicing, feature period fireplaces and deep windows.

Offered unfurnished, it has an entrance hall, living room and sitting room – both with bay windows – and a study/fourth bedroom.

The kitchen is nicely fitted and has an oven and hob, dishwasher and a smart Rayburn stove. There is also a utility/sun room on the ground floor.

There are three fully-fitted double bedrooms and a new shower room upstairs, as well as a family bathroom with shower cubicle.

All wrapped up in pretty gardens – and with that fantastic rural view.

It is offered by Stephensons at a rental of £1,200pcm.

As a complete contrast, our next property is very much a town pad, a fascinating home tucked away off Lord Mayor’s Walk, just a few minutes walk from the city centre.

Moorside Cottage is a periodstyle detached property with its own private garden and parking area accessed through electric gates.

It is offered to let fully (and very stylishly) furnished.

There is an open-plan lounge/dining room, a luxurious and contemporary- styled kitchen which includes a good range of integrated appliances.

The master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and there is a second double bedroom and a house shower room.

A unique property offered by Ashtons at a rental of £995pcm.

The same agent also has another beautifully-presented home to rent, this one in St Paul’s Terrace, Holgate, again within walking distance of the city centre.

Here you have an entrance straight into a lounge and then onto a superb open-plan kitchen and dining room, the kitchen being fully fitted with dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine and oven and hob.

There is a ground-floor bathroom to the rear. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms. Outside space comes in the shape of a rear courtyard.

Ashtons are asking for £725pcm.

Also not far from the city centre we have a smart flat in Blossom Street – situated for living literally above the shop and in a decidedly dez-rez spot.

It offers a good-sized lounge, a fitted kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Ideal for professionals who want to be in a smart spot close to the city centre and the railway station.

It is offered by Quantum at a rental of £695pcm.

And now comes a traditional terraced house in Levisham Street, Fishergate, a smart property which has been modernised throughout to a good standard. This one offers a lounge, separate dining room, kitchen and two double bedrooms.

It is offered unfurnished at a rental of £765pcm. Inquire with Quantum for this one, too.

And as we are going in pairs, here’s a cute couple from Letters Ltd.

Prospect Terrace sits just inside the city walls in the popular Bishophill area and this is a smart terraced house just right for sharers or a couple.

Newly decorated and carpeted, it has a spacious kitchen and groundfloor bathroom, a smart reception room, and two double bedrooms upstairs. There’s a good-sized yard.

The rental is £625pcm.

The second Letters Ltd offering is in Sutherland Street in the equally desirable South Bank area, an unfurnished terrace house with a dash of character including stripped wooden floors.

There is plenty of space here with reception rooms to back and front and a modern kitchen. There are two double bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor. This one also has a sunny rear yard.

The rental is £695pcm.
