IT’S tricky to avoid Kodaline at the moment, with regular rotation on many radio stations and TV adverts every 15 minutes reminding you their debut album exists.
Luckily, the product of all the publicity is worth a listen, even if the band’s style is a largely familiar blend of Snow Patrol, Coldplay and U2. Debut single All I Want, for example, is achingly Travis-esque, as is album opener One Day.
Both wouldn’t sound out of place on The Man Who… and guarantee a certain quality without ever likely bothering the musical snob.
Love Like This is a quick, jaunty number, all mandolin, harmonica and whistles, which feels more like something you haven’t heard for a while, and the excellent High Hopes is guaranteed to be heard on countless sporting montages for the foreseeable future.
Steve Garrigan’s vocals are recognisable, high and fragile one minute and low and sharp the next, and the musical talent surrounding him is solid too. All they need to do is find a sound of their own.
