THE history of a North Yorkshire hamlet which shares its name with one of the world’s biggest cities is to come under the spotlight.

New York, in Nidderdale, is so small it does not appear on maps.

But it is the site of a large flax mill which at its peak employed about 150 people and today it is the only mill in this dale still providing jobs in small industrial units.

Historian Jane Simpson has devoted seven years to unravelling the mill’s long history. She will give a talk at 12.30pm on June 28 at the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Malpas Road, Northallerton. Admission is £1.
