THE NRM has marked the birthday of Mallard designer Sir Nigel Gresley by recreating a classic photo of him from 1938, the year the loco broke the world speed record.
The trilby-hatted engineering genius - aka actor Chris Cade from Platform 4 Theatre - turned up at the museum today, two weeks before the 75th anniversary of the engine travelling at at 126 mph on the East Coast Main Line on July 3, 1938.
The stunt marked the 137th anniversary of the birth of Sir Nigel, who designed the Mallard and the Flying Scotsman for the London and North Eastern Railway.
The A4 loco named after the engineer, Sir Nigel Gresley, is due to arrive on site for a ‘Great Gathering’ of similar locos next week.
