PLANS for a new floodlit sports pitch in a town near York have been given a £100,000 boost.

Hambleton District Council’s cabinet has approved releasing cash earmarked for a sports hall at Easingwold’s secondary school for the pitch, part of a £350,000 package to be spent on public space, sport and recreation projects in the town over the next three to four years.

Councillors were told a £1 million funding gap for the sports hall still had to be closed and it may be “some distance from fruition”.

Deputy leader Coun Peter Wilkinson said: “As a result, the headteacher and governing body have decided to divert some funding into a full-size synthetic turf floodlit pitch.

"We had allocated money set aside from new developments in the area and £100,000 of this will now go to the pitch.”

Cash has also been earmarked for projects by Easingwold Town Council, the Galtres Centre, Easingwold Town FC and the town's cricket, tennis and bowls clubs.
