A GROUP of cyclists was setting off on a three-day journey through North and East Yorkshire today to help the fight against diabetes and three good causes.

Members of the North Yorkshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (NYDESP) set off from Skipton today and are heading for Bridlington, passing through Pateley Bridge, Ripon, Boroughbridge, York, Stamford Bridge, Pocklington and Driffield – a distance of 132 miles.

The money they raise will go towards Diabetes UK, York Diabetes Centre and York Eye Clinic, and the eight-strong team will also be promoting the benefits of screening and stopping at several GP surgeries where they provide a mobile screening service en route. More than 36,000 people with diabetes are offered screening every year in North Yorkshire.

The cyclists will pass through York tomorrow at about noon.
