RESIDENTS in Selby have been urged to have their say on turning empty houses into homes in the district.

As part of Selby District Council’s programme for growth, which was set up to support retail, jobs growth, housing, infrastructure and leisure services, the authority is preparing to target homes that are long-term empty, and those which are unlikely to return to use without intervention.

The initiative will be open for consultation to property owners and members of the public, and will run for six weeks from Monday until Sunday August 4.

Coun Chris Metcalfe, member of the Executive and lead member for communities, said: “There can be many complex reasons why properties are empty. This strategy would enable us to work with property owners and our partner organisations to address these reasons. Our aim is to ensure that our communities have access to the housing that they need.”
