A YORK church will be doing its bit for the environment and the community by holding a garden and flower festival this weekend.

The event, called Growing Together, will be held at St Luke’s Church in Burton Stone Lane on Saturday and Sunday and will see plants and flowers on display in the street and in the church, alongside community-growing projects and children’s activities.

The church’s curate, the Rev Liz Carrington, has helped to organise the festival.

She said: “St Luke’s is a church which really cares about the environment and the street where we worship, and Growing Together is a way of bringing these two loves together.

“This year, the theme is container gardening and an alternative flower festival with a twist. We’ve been working with people along the street to grow herbs, vegetables and flowers in gardens, yards and in containers and we’ve planted potatoes in the church garden.

“Looking after the environment benefits everybody and, if we all do our bit and work together, we can make a greater impact.”

Growing Together runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, when it will end with a family service called Love Where You Live in the church.
