DIVISION one leaders Poppleton recorded a 12-0 clean sweep over 2009 champions Dunnington in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

Captain Nick Turnbull and dad Paul each scored 29 games with respective partners Pat Evans and John Anderson as Poppy notched 84 games. Poppleton have surpassed the 50-point milestone this season in only five matches, bettering all other teams.

Rowntree Park are not too far behind after James Denmark was again on target, this time with captain Ian MacAulay, winning three points from 31 games in an 11½-½ (86-22) demolition of Pocklington.

In division three, the top-of-the-table clash was all Bubwith, until York 1 fought back with a 2½-21 final round, which squared the rubbers. Bubwith held out to take the team bonus by 55-53.

At Boston Spa, a final round 8-4 from Dave Aspland and Jamie Dewar, playing his second match of the day, helped the home side square a match against third-placed Rowntree Park 2. The rubbers were shared, with both first pairs unbeaten, and the match finished 54-54, for a 6-6 draw.

Knaresborough King James move up one, after a comprehensive win at home to Wigginton 2. Alex Wilkin and Dave Hewson rattled an impressive 3-28 past the injury-depleted visitors.

York 2 saw off Wilberfoss by the same margin, although Matt & Dan Poole won one 7-5 rubber for the bottom-of-the-table team. Starbeck 2 snatched second place in division four from their hosts, Rufforth, who won only one rubber in a 10-2 reverse. Chris James and Ivan Dechovsky with 3-31 helped leaders Harlow to 10½ points at Sutton-on-Derwent 2.

Division five leaders David Lloyd 2 went down heavily, at third-placed Riccall, despite claiming 2 points off Riccall top pair, the Woodwards. Boston Spa 2 leap to second, after wringing bine points from just 57 games won, in a closely-fought match at luckless Bishopthorpe 2. Will Parkins and Matt Saxon scored an efficient 3-21.

Fourth-placed Heworth are just three points off the top, as Nick Latcham and Ollie Hicks were again imperious with 3-32 at home to Dunnington 2.

This week’s top-guns are Harrogate Racquets’ Oliver Scaife and John Hargreaves, who only lost one game in their division eight tie against Boston Spa 3. A tremendous effort from Wilberfoss 2’s Ed Penfold and Darren Penrose with 2½-23, failed to stop York 4 from persevering for a close 59-49 (8½-3½) away victory.

With their captain away, a youthful Heworth 2 enjoyed a division six romp at Pocklington 2, coming away with 11½ points, to narrow the gap on the top two, to just half a match (six points).

Sheriff Hutton advanced to fourth, above Wigginton 3, with their third win of the season, while Wigginton were sent spiralling to a 61-47 (9-3) defeat by visiting Stamford Bridge 2.

Meanwhile, brothers Josh and Tim Williams finished unbeaten with 2½-22 at Selby. Selby captain Ian Rothery and Alex Needham won the two points which take them off bottom spot.
