KNAVESMIRE resounded to the sound of music as crowds flocked to York racecourse for the second annual YO1 Festival.

Big queues built up at the entrance gates and for drinks as residents made the most of the first really warm weekend of the year.

Among the attractions were a mix of bands and performers on five stages, the YO1 Micro Ale Festival, street food from different parts of the world and a vintage fair.

The event was first held at Askham Bryan College last year, but the response was so strong, organisers moved it to Knavesmire.

Concert-goers gave mixed responses, with some praising the music and others complaining about the long queues.

The music acts included Rudimental, whose debut album Home is number one in the album charts; pop-folk singer Alice Ostapjuk from York; Alisia Casper from Leeds; AlunaGeorge which has been shortlisted for two national awards; vintage Jamaica group Bangarang and electronic dance music specialists Bangers & Mash DJs.

The Micro Ale Festival had about 16 ales and ciders for drinkers to sample and compare.

The food side of the festival featured street fare from Mexico and South America, Punjabi vegetarian food and upmarket fish and chips as well as other fish dishes.
