PUPILS at Kirk Hammerton C of E Primary School have been digging for treasure in the school’s playing fields.
Recently launched local company, Bramble Archaeology, visited and helped children perform the art of ‘test pitting’, involving the excavation of 1 metre square area using small trowels, with the soil then being sieved to reveal what lies beneath.
The archaeologists helped identify what the artefacts might be and how they came to be under their playing fields to give an insight into the past and bring the curriculum alive.
Steve Collison, co-owner of Bramble Archaeology, said: ‘’Children are intrigued by what they find when they explore the ground. We have identified a gap in the market for experienced archaeologists such as my wife Liz and me to take archaeology out to schools and bring it alive via workshops and hands on sessions.”
Year 5 pupil Jess Newman said: “It was great fun and I really enjoyed working independently. We found some pottery and bone’’.
