RUNNERS from York Knavesmire Harriers have hit form for the York & District Road Race League (YDRRL).

A series of strong results were ideal preparation for the Harriers’ defence of their women’s and men’s team titles, which was due to get under way last night.

The hotly-contested series of six ten-kilometre races began at Pocklington.

Reigning YRDDL women’s individual champion Emma Yates was first woman home at the Helmsley Challenge Multi-Terrain 10k race, while Harriers’ women’s team captain Andrea Lancaster claimed an age category prize in the Blackpool Half-marathon.

Also at Blackpool, reigning YRDDL Vet40 champion Ian Anderson proved he was in fine form with an excellent third place.

Meanwhile, several club members warmed up for the league by running in the London Marathon.

Chris Roberts took 20 minutes off his best time for the marathon distance, while Richard Lowson managed to finish in under three hours despite an injured hamstring.

Paul and Sue Adams also entered having first run the race 30 and 20 years ago respectively.

Andy Falconer ran despite competing in the tough Connemara Marathon in Ireland only two weeks previously.

Geoff Marchment ran in London and raised £1,500 for CLIC Sargent, while Dave Bygrave raised £500 for Save The Children.
