York Indoor Bowls Club saw off the challenge of Metrodome in the opening game of the Egham Trophy with a 79-67 aggregate triumph.

At home, Paul Mooring trailed 7-0 after four ends, but countered to lead 10-8 with a three on the tenth before cruising home 23-16.

David Stroughair had a tight first half where singles were scored on the first nine ends and trailed 5-4. He then won three successive ends to lead 10-5, keeping command through to a 21-13 win.

At Barnsley, Gordon Smith went into the last end 16-14 down, but a four gave them victory while, in the other rink, Mark Clark only trailed by one shot with two ends to play but eventually lost 22-17. York now play Hornsea on December 3.

New Earswick went out of the competition at the first hurdle, losing 88-79 to Featherstone.

The damage was done in the first half where they trailed 53-35. A spirited fight-back took them to within three shots before the West Yorkshire team again piled on the pressure scoring 14 shots to only one against.

Bob Howland got a deserved 15-15 draw scoring a single on the last end, while Dave Sykes did well to come back from 18-7 down after ten ends before losing 25-20.

At home, Bob Edwards led 22-14 with three ends to play but a dropped six followed by a two levelled the scores. However, a two on the last secured a 24-22 home win. Barry Johnson scored a five on the last but could not stave off a 26-20 reverse.

York maintained their lead at the top of the Hebden Trophy League with an emphatic 99-61 win against Scarborough collecting 16 points.

At home, Brian Thomas only won two of the first eight ends but pulled away in style only losing three more en route to a resounding 39-9 win. Tony Bryan also had a comfortable time, despite a late stumble, in winning 23-18.

At Scarborough, Alwyn Johnson surged 8-0 up after five ends to underpin a 23-15 triumph. Eric Hodgson led 12-11 with six ends to play but could only win two of them and went down 19-14.

New Earswick's challenge folded as they lost 86-83 to Selby.

Only picking up six points, the only highlights were at Selby, where Dave Sykes lost the last two ends but won 20-17, and, at home, from Bob Howland who won 24-16.
