Now we really have heard them all. Leaves on the line, the wrong kind of snow - none of these excuses holds a candle to the reason binmen gave for not emptying Brian Watson's green bin.

The leaves inside were frozen, they told him.

Frozen leaves, it seems, tend to stick - and for health and safety reasons binmen can't reach in to loosen them.

Which raises the question - with winter coming, what will happen to the hundreds of green bins across York which are bound to freeze?

A case of the wrong kind of common sense, we'd suggest.
