THE York-based Farepak Response Fund has extended its deadline for donations as the pot of contributions nears the £5 million mark.
The fund was set up by the Family Fund, in Monks Cross, York, following the collapse of the Christmas hamper firm last month which hit an estimated 150,000 savers, most of whom are on low incomes.
Money raised through the emergency appeal, which has now reached £4.9 million, will be distributed through Farepak agents to customers in the form of vouchers in time for Christmas.
Marion Lowe, chief executive, said: "We are extending the deadline for donations until 6pm on Wednesday, November 29. There has been a surge in donations and we don't want to miss out on anyone's generosity, large or small. All letters and funds need to be in our hands and in the bank before then. Let us all do our very best to bring these families some Christmas cheer."
To give to the fund, phone 0845 260 1096 or visit www.farepakresponsefund.org.uk. To make a large donation, phone 01904 550 038.
