RAWCLIFFE won the battle of the top two in the York FA Under-19s Football League, beating title rivals Wigginton Grasshoppers 4-2.

In a tight game at Wigginton, Ryan Gothard, Andy Simpson, Robin Jefferson and prolific striker Callum Ward secured the points for Rawcliffe.

Sam Martin and Josh Hutchinson replied for Wiggy, who head the table by two points having played a game more than Rawcliffe.

The game was a dress rehearsal for tomorrow’s York FA U19s Cup final between the sides at Tockwith, kick off 1.30pm.

Tockwith will also stage the York FA Acaster Steel (U12s) Cup final between Poppleton Tigers and York RI, kick off 11am.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the York FA U19s League, Elvington Harriers were edged out 3-2 by visitors Thorpe United.

Josh Watson and James Hampshire were on target for the home side, but Jamie Jennings and Adam Gell matched those strikes and Thorpe conjured a late winner from Max Fauxner.

Haxby Town beat second from bottom Wistow 4-2 with goals from Lewis Clark, Jay Bell, Kieron Dunlop and Joe Elleker.

Tomorrow’s fixtures see Elvington host Haxby Town and Wistow entertain Thorpe.
