Round four of the Yorkshire Winter Angling League found the Ouse between Hunters Lodge and Linton carrying three feet of icy-cold floodwater.

The unfavourable conditions did not deter the Selby team, however, who took the day with a brilliant score of 70 points.

Tim Harrison (Anglers World Holidays) led from peg 232 at Linton, where an early chub of more than four pounds paved the way to victory. A couple of smaller roach also found his legered worm to their liking boosting his net to a winning 5lb.

Dave Topham (Wibsey Sensas) was kept busy at peg 250 at Linton, where pole and pinkie targeting a near-side area of slack water produced 70 tiny roach for a 4lb 8oz total.

Despite slipping to fourth on the day, and with it blowing their 100 per cent record in the series, Wibsey Sensas are still comfortable leaders with seven points.

Selby's win moves them up to fifth place, a point behind the other local team, Anglers World Holidays, whose third on the day helped to consolidate their third spot in the overall standings.

There were no blanks at Langwith Lakes on Sunday, but a bright day after a sharp frost made for a patchy event and there was certainly nothing wrong with Tang Hall rod Alwyn Martindale's 48lb 6oz top bag.

Having pulled three on Kevin's Lake out of the hat, Martindale offered maggot down the track at six metres to find carp to 2lb, which he held with a little and often feeding regime which paid rich dividends.

It was tight for second place, but Rob Lockwood's 39lb of carp taken on pellet and 13m pole at Kevin's 28 proved just enough.

Result: 1 Alwyn Martindale, Langwith, 48-6-0; 2 Rob Lockwood, Leeds, 39-0-0; 3 Tony McLarnon, West Park, 38-4-0; 4 Andy Skelton, Langwith, 36-10-0; 5 David Banks, Ackton AC, 33-8-0; 6 Dave Bouja, Eccleshill, 22-8-0.

A summer-like 145lb 4oz belied the biting wind sweeping around The Willows and put the result beyond doubt as fishery boss Paul Gallagher left the rest trailing.

Drawn at 47 on Goldrush, Gallagher pushed treble maggot across to the island with 13m of carbon and found carp in the 4-5lb bracket within minutes of the start, keeping them interested for the duration.

The rest of the field were led home by Barry Klar, who used double maggot at peg 42 to take fish of the same size and finish with 39lb 6oz in the net.

Result: 1 Paul Gallagher, Willows, 145-4-0; 2 Barry Klar, Mitre AC, 39-6-0; 3 Andy Hampson, Hirst Tackle, 26-8-0; 4 Stewart Wilson, Leeds Angling, 20-4-0; 5 Stan Jeffries, Leeds Angling, 19-8-0; 6 Andy Gallant, Bob-Co, 17-3-0.

Another angler who adapted well to the rapidly changing climate was Mick Addinall (Spectrum), who topped round six of the Bob-Co Winter Series at Carpvale.

Drawn on unfancied peg 23 on the match pool, he chose to abandon the big baits and tow rope' lines for a more subtle approach in the cooling water. Offering a single maggot on light line close to the reed cover at 13 metres, he found ten small carp for his 31lb 10oz.

Well adrift in second was Steve Pearson (Bob-Co Tackle), who sat it out on the bomb and corn at peg eight on Cyprio Pool for half a dozen carp scaling 23lb 4oz.
