THE back nine at the Kuala Lumpur Golf Club proved ruinous for York’s Simon Dyson.
The six-time European Tour title winner looked certain to crash out at the half-way stage of the Maybank Malaysian Open after a three over 145.
Having been handily placed at two under par in his first round before a monsoon wiped out the rest of the opening day’s play, Dyson improved his score with a birdie at the tenth hole yesterday.
But successive double bogies and another dropped shot at the 13th were a serious setback, while a rare birdie at 15 was followed by a double at the 16th and a first round score of 75, which had looked improbable with nine holes remaining.
Starting his second round on the tenth, a familiar pattern soon emerged. Bogies at the tenth, 12th and 14th effectively ended his interest, although he dug deep to record three birdies in a row on the third, fourth and fifth, his second round total – a level par 72.
