I DO not understand why your report on the new Jeff Banks store at York Designer Outlet starts with "a new fashion store has been officially opened in the city" (Banks to set up York shop, The Press, October 20).
Whenever a new store opens there the council hails it as a good thing for the City of York.
I am sure there are not many people who would class the designer outlet as being in the city and the shoppers who go there to buy last season's fashions at knockdown prices do not then come into York to spend more money in the smaller shops that need the trade.
The designer outlet is an out-of-town shopping centre for larger retailers and it should never be classed as being in, or for the benefit of, the city.
