SELBY Warriors Under-15s came from behind to edge West Bowling 8-4 in a tough match.

Both sides began with good intensity, despite soggy conditions, with the Bradford side scoring first.

However, Selby struck back after a powerful run from man-of-the-match Ben Copeland, captain Chaz Fothergill skilfully keeping the push play going to finish a fine try.

Selby, who should have gone ahead by half-time given their possession and field position, stayed on top in the second half.

Both sides began dropping too much ball, forcing the pass while looking for the crucial next score, but penalties aided Selby’s cause and loose-forward Fothergill powered over for the winner midway through the half.

Outstanding in a committed Selby team was wingman Ethan Mack, while centre George Dobson-Wright had a strong debut.

Jamie Morrison scored a hat-trick as Heworth U13s gave another battling performance – only to lose 24-16 to Dudley Hill. The visitors crossed first but Heworth battled back through the tireless Alfie Hancock, Cain North and Henrie Grimbley, with Morrison scoring a blockbuster.

Heworth got on top and Morrison completed his treble and Josh Johnstone got a maiden score. However, players picked up knocks and Dudley Hill fought back.

Heworth’s man of the match was Jake Wright, while debutant Jordan O’Hara also impressed.

New Earswick All Blacks U12s continued their 100 per cent winning start to the season with a 46-4 victory at Batley Boys. All Blacks expected a tough game but travelled in confident mood and, although the hosts took the lead, the visitors took control.

Forwards Joe Davison, Alex Horn and Fin Osborne, the opposition’s choice of man of the match, made their presence felt and Daniel Scorfield made good yards from acting-half, while Jamie Chester and man-of-the-match Callum Williams gave their best performances of the season.

Reece Ounsley had an impressive tackle count despite injury, just short of top tackler Lewis Goodall.

Try scorers were Ben Richardson, Jack Byrne, Alex Horn, Scorfield (2), Osborne (2) and Williams (2), with the excellent Byrne adding five goals.

Hat-trick heroine Ellena Powell led a comeback as New Earswick U11s snatched victory at Townsville Tigers.

Townsville were threatening All Blacks’ line when full-back Frank Strange intercepted and dashed 65 yards before being caught. Two quick play-the-balls and good yards from Magnus Fielding then set up Lewis Young to score the winner.

Townville had opened the scoring and, although All Blacks hit back through Powell, snapping the ball out of the air ten yards out to equalise, and Young, showing strength to cross, the hosts went clear with three tries.

Powell twice struck back, though, firstly from 25 yards with two lads on her back, and then scooting over from 15 yards, before Young’s winner.

Young was All Blacks’ top tackler, Taylor McDonough the most improved and Dan Cannon the man of the match. Powell was the parents’ player of the match and the opposition’s choice of top performer for the third week running.

Heworth U10s left it to the closing minutes to draw level with Stanley Rangers.

The latter had adapted better to the conditions to go ahead, but Heworth got back into the game, led well by Callum Dunmore, David Strange and Myles Harrison.

Try-scorers were Strange, Dunmore, Jack Young and Callum Rutland.

Improving New Earswick U10s impressed at Ovenden.

Danny Copley was the top try scorer, showing fast feet and quick thinking. Thomas Brown was the top tackler and man of the match, and captain Travis Dale the opposition’s choice of top performer.

Billy Nicholson and Willliam Lea shared the magic moment award, the former for a near full-length effort – which set up a try for most improved player Alfie Bonner – and the latter for fine tackling.
