YOUTH music projects in York and East Yorkshire have received a welcome cash injection from a national charity.

Door 84 in York and Castaway Goole in East Yorkshire were among those awarded a portion of funding from youth music charity Youth Music which has given some £302,000 for projects in Yorkshire and the Humber.

In York, £48,500 will see Door 84 and the Upfaders Music Centre join forces to offer music opportunities for 1,000 young people.

Dan Axon, Upfaders music leader and project manager, said: “Upfaders was highly successful between 2009 and 2011 with its initial funding from Youth Music, but we were unable to meet the demand from disadvantaged young people in York.

"This new award will allow us to make massive developments in the project by joining forces with Door84 and setting ourselves even more ambitious goals.”

He said Upfaders was a way to support disadvantaged young people who lack the confidence, skills and qualifications to get education and training.

Castaway Goole has recevied £24,700 to provide help to disabled children and young people in the Goole, East Riding and North Lincolnshire areas learn how to make music.

Youth Music is the leading UK charity supporting life-changing music experiences and learning for children and young people.

Executive director Matt Griffiths, said: “We are delighted to support Door 84 and Castaway Goole along with all the other organisations that are doing such great work to support young people in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas.

“We know that music captures the imagination of children and young people in a way that other learning often doesn’t and the benefits of their participation go way beyond developing musical skills. These benefits can include greater social and team working skills as well as enhanced self-esteem.

“We wish Door 84 and Castaway Goole every success with their very worthwhile projects.”
