A BURNING boat sank in the River Ouse despite firefighters battling for hours to put out the blaze.
The fire service was called at about 11.30pm on Saturday by a member of the public, to say the eight-metre long pleasure boat was going up in smoke on the Ouse.
It was moored near Acaster Lane, Bishopthorpe, and fire crews managed to access it through the allotments.
The water rescue unit, from York, fought to put out the fire on board the boat until 2am, but the blaze was so bad it eventually sank beneath the water.
The boat, which was made from wood, plastic and fibre glass, suffered 95 per cent fire damage.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
A fire service spokesman said no one had been on board the vessel and local residents said it had been tied up for a number of weeks.
