Andy D’Agorne (Letters, March 19) and other politicians from the Prime Minister down seem to think Britain is encased in some sort of bubble that is finite and needs protecting at all costs.

Because of this belief any CO2 producing process, from our own exhalations through to huge industrial processes, must be toned down asap.

This bubble notion is, of course, ludicrous and we share the same atmosphere as the rest of the planet so shutting down our power stations is shooting ourselves in the foot.

In his critique of Sellafield Mr. D’Agorne shows he hasn’t the faintest idea of what happens there.

Having worked at Sellafield for one week every month for 15 years, I do.

Sellafield is a reprocessing plant and takes in spent nuclear fuel from power stations, submarines etc, cleans it up and returns the new fuel back to its owners.

Yes there are carefully monitored tanks full of nuclear waste, but “outdated nuclear facilities” is just a meaningless scare phrase.

Mr. D’Agorne says we should reduce our electrical consumption by cutting down and using insulation.

Unfortunately, Mr. D’Agorne, it is 2013 not 1913 and unlimited electrical power is looked on as a given.

From a worldwide total of 432 nuclear power stations, our near neighbours, France, are second only to the US in the numbers of nuclear plants they possess.

Strangely, there is very little heard from irate citizens from these countries getting all hot and bothered about the nuclear power-stations in their midst.
