HAS anyone else noticed that the streets of York are starting to resemble a patchwork quilt?

In several areas including High Ousegate, King’s Square and the end of the Shambles, work has gone on which entailed the lifting of sets, paving slabs and, in the case of the Shambles, cobblestones.

All perfectly understandable if cables etc need to be buried, but why, instead of relaying the original stones, have the holes just been filled with large dollops of Tarmac, some of which are already starting to crumble away at the edges?

These areas are now nothing but eye-sores, especially in a busy tourist area like King’s Square and Shambles.

More to the point, where have all the original stones disappeared to?

Strangely enough, the newly laid paving leading to the new council offices looks beautiful.

No patches of ugly Tarmac there. I wonder why?
