POLICE were called to a local league match in York after a dispute blew up over a last-minute penalty.

The incident happened at Copmanthorpe recreation ground on Saturday afternoon at the end of a York Minster Engineering Football League Premier Division game between Copmanthorpe and Rowntrees.

Copmanthorpe goalkeeper Ben Sheehan converted his fourth penalty of the season with virtually the last kick of the game as his team won 1-0. A Rowntree player is understood to have been sent off after confronting match officials, and a spectator then called the police.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the matter had been resolved peacefully and no complaints had been made in the end.

“We arrived and spoke to everyone involved and they apologised to each other, and there was no damage or injury to anyone,” she said.

Rowntree secretary Michael Hodgson said the team’s players had felt every decision was going against them and there had been shouting and perhaps swearing at the referee and linesman.
