SO, PIP BURKE couldn’t find a card appropriate for the occasion, bemoaning the fact that Valentine’s Day clashes with the anniversary of the death of Captain James Cook RN (Letters February 14).

He then goes on to say that it is a pity this and Valentine’s Day clash, but a day should be set aside to honour the great man and none better than this very day. May I suggest the date of his birth, November 7, as an appropriate date?

And finally he apologises to his wife for the lack of an appropriate card to celebrate this man’s death. How romantic!

I can just imagine the scene at the Burke household as Pip gazes lovingly into his wife’s eyes and utters the words every lady wants to hear on this day: “Happy anniversary on the death of Captain James Cook RN.”
