PRIVATE home care workers in York have been defended after a report from a powerful health watchdog said standards from some UK providers needed to be raised.

Mike Padgham, chairman of the Independent Care Group (York and North Yorkshire), said reports based on the latest findings by the Care Quality Commission painted an “unfair picture of homecare”.

While the report said overall care in the UK was good, it identified a number of areas for improvement, including a lack of warning of delayed or cancelled visits, care plans not updated for several years and a lack of clear systems to monitor care plans.

Mr Padgham said: “Some 75 per cent of the 250 home care providers met the CQS’s standards, which is an excellent achievement and an improvement on previous years.
