BY rights, it should be a case of diminishing returns for Eels’ idiosyncratic Mark “E” Everett by now. Instead, unlike Prince or Lemonheads’ Evan Dando, he has never faltered in his remarkable songwriting consistency, ploughing a distinctive furrow with his scuzzy, fuzzy rock that is at home in a Shrek movie as on BBC6 Music.

Wonderful, Glorious is not a boastful title, nor an ironic one, more the bright, hopeful light on the horizon, after a journey of ups and downs, wounds and healing, on the snarling Bombs Away, fragrant Peach Blossom, regretful Kinda Fuzzy and weary On The Ropes.

Above all, this latter-day dustbowl troubadour has the punch of emotional honesty as he strives to makes sense of all around him, especially in his frank but tender and beautiful love songs: songs from the head and the heart such as You’re My Friend and Stick Together. Push the boat out for the even more wonderful bonus disc edition: more “E” numbers, both studio extras and live rough-cuts.
