EAST Yorkshire racer Mark Beevers is already plotting the defence of his British Supermoto 450 Quad Championship.

The 45-year-old, who is based near Elvington, lifted the title for the first time in 2012 and is desperate to hang on to his crown in 2013.

Beevers produced a series of consistent displays throughout the eight-round, 24-race competition, with constant podium appearances enough to swing a close battle for the silverware.

“I had a fair idea that I stood a good chance of winning it and it worked out,” said Miller Oils-sponsored Beevers, one of the oldest riders in the championship.

“It was an exceptional year, but it was close. There are young lads on the grid who have a little bit more daring than me, but I am Mr Consistency.

“I was on the podium at every race meeting. I had six or seven wins and a lot of seconds and thirds, and that won me the championship.”

The highlight of a season which included meetings at Silverstone, Cadwell, Blyton, Wigan and Teesside, was winning all three races at Rowrah, in Cumbria.

“I always wanted to race quad bikes, but I never had enough money to do it,” said Beevers, who runs his own powder coating and painting business.

“When I got to 40, I decided to have a go.

“I went and finished first in a local Enduro race on rough terrain and then ended up winning the North of England title.

“I just couldn’t take the hammer of the terrain any more, so I entered the Supermoto because it is on tarmac. It is faster and easier on the body and I’ve been doing it for about three years now.”

The trophy was presented at a recent ceremony and Beevers said it was “fantastic” to be feted along with all the other class winners.

Third place in the championship standings went to 20-year-old Luke Holman, son of Beevers’ long-time riding partner Dave Holman.

Said Beevers: “I am going to have to fight to keep the title. Luke is quick.

“He’s been riding with us since he was a little lad, so he’s up to speed.”

Holman senior, 45, who lives near Pocklington, missed the majority of the season after shattering a knee cap when hitting a tyre wall at Silverstone.
