UNLESS City of York Council gritting lorries are going beyond the call of duty and extending their boundary runs to the Arctic tundra, then your accompanying journalist Megi Rychlikova’s night-time observations could be somewhat flawed (The Press, January 24).
An owl she did see, but not a snowy owl, I fear. What she more likely saw was a barn owl which at night or dusk looks all white, but is only half the size.
Its snowy cousin is a rare winter visitor to these shores, and then mainly the far north, such as the Shetland Isles.
