VANDALS have wrecked festive lights on a giant Christmas tree at the heart of a York community.

The Friends Of Acomb Green spent hundreds of pounds putting up the four-metre Christmas tree – brightening up the neighbourhood and spreading seasonal cheer – but yobs have tried to tear down the lights.

Keith Myers, chairman of the Friends, said the committee and residents had been devastated by the act of vandalism to the tree, which had become a focal point for community Christmas celebrations over the past three years.

He said: “It is a great shame this has occurred.”

“The committee have worked hard to have a tree erected and the lights cost a lot of money, then this happens just as we are preparing for our carols round the tree event later this week.

“We are a committee of limited funds and fixing this may prevent us doing something else further down the line.”

Mr Myers said the vandalism – which is being investigated by the police – happened some time between Friday night and Saturday morning.

He said a resident had informed the committee after noticing half the lights were not working.

Mr Myers said upon further investigation it became apparent that the lights had been pulled from the tree which had blown the circuit.

He vowed the vandals would not take the shine off the festive spirit.

He said electricians were now hoping to fix the lights ahead of the community family carol service on Thursday, which will be attended by the Lord Mayor and civic party.

The service will take place at 6.30pm with free hot drinks provided by Acomb Quakers. All are welcome.
