DESMOND Tutu is in York this week to receive an honorary degree alongside hundreds of students graduating from York St John University.

Today is the first of three days of degree ceremonies at York Minster for St John students.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof David Fleming, said: “Graduation is a wonderful time for students to celebrate their achievements. We always strive to inspire our graduates and are delighted to be awarding honorary degrees to six exceptional individuals, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Ian McMillan, Glynn Ryland, Julia Unwin, Sandi Toksvig and Dr Elizabeth White. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to honour and celebrate the contributions made to society by each of these remarkable people and I’m certain that our graduates will be hugely inspired by all of their accomplishments.”

Archbishop Tutu will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws, alongside the university’s education and theology graduates tomorrow, in recognition of his contribution to society.

Known around the world as a greatly respected anti-apartheid activist, peace campaigner and champion of reconciliation, Archbishop Tutu, who recently celebrated his 81st birthday, has been described as “South Africa’s moral conscience”.

Among the other honorary degrees being awarded this week are Yorkshire poet, broadcaster, commentator and programme-maker, Ian McMillan, who will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters today.

Glynn Ryland, industry talent manager for Channel 4, will also receive a Doctor of Letters from the university today. He has strong links with York St John University, having studied Television, Film and Drama at the campus, graduating in 1992.

Julia Unwin, chief executive of the York-based Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, will be attending the morning ceremony tomorrow where she will be presented with a Doctor of Laws in recognition of her extensive work in the voluntary sector.

On Friday comedian, author and presenter Sandi Toksvig will be awarded a Doctor of Letters. Sandi is well-known for appearing on many Radio 4 programmes, she presented the travel programme Excess Baggage for ten years and is the current chair of The News Quiz.

Sandi’s daughter Jessica graduated from the university last year with a degree in film and television production.

Also being honoured is Dr Elizabeth White, who will receive a Doctor of Health Sciences on Friday. Dr White has been head of research and development at the College of Occupational Therapists since 2002.

Honorary degrees will be presented at the graduation ceremonies in York Minster by the university’s chancellor, the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, or by the vice- chancellor, Prof David Fleming.
