COULD you be Cinderella, the Prince or an Ugly Sister but not star in a pantomime? York Musical Theatre Company is looking for cast members for their spring production of The Slipper And The Rose, the real story of Cinderella.

“Originally a movie, starring Richard Chamberlain and Gemma Craven back in the 1970s, it’s been revived recently on Broadway, and we’ll be doing the stage version at York Theatre Royal from April 12 to 16,” says company publicity officer Anna Mitchelson.

“We’re now getting ready to set the rehearsal process going from February onwards.

“With that in mind, we’ll be holding open auditions, preceded by an introduction evening for the show, which allows anybody interested in taking part to come along, hear more about our production, meet the director, Paul Laidlaw, and learn more about what will be required at the auditions.”

The open evening will be held at New Earswick Primary School on Tuesday, February 1, from 7.30pm and the auditions will follow at the same location on Sunday, February 6, from 10am onwards.

Anyone interested in taking part in the auditions or requiring any more information is asked to send an email to chairman Jim Welsman at jim@welsman.com or to write to Jim Welsman, 10 Grassholme, Woodthorpe, York, YO24 2ST.

The Slipper And The Rose was originally made as a film in 1976, directed by Bryan Forbes with a notable supporting cast that included Edith Evans, Michael Hordern, Margaret Lockwood and Kenneth More. The score went on to receive Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe Best Original Score nominations.

In 2004 came the Broadway revival and the musical has been seen on the British stage in recent years too.

“Although the story contains many of the original and much loved elements of the Cinderella story, including characters, this version contains many additional twists and unexpected turns to keep the audience on their toes,” says Anna.

“With a beautiful song score and a specially designed set and costumes, it’s going to be a magical musical for all the family.”
