THE pupils of Miss Isobel Dunn present Dance Flash 2009, her 65th annual show, at the Grand Opera House, York, tomorrow at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

Dancers of all ages, from three to 80, will be taking part in ballet, tap, jazz and musical theatre items under the watchful eye of the 85-year-old doyenne of York dance teachers.

Act 2 of Coppelia features Glen Jackson as Dr Coppelius and Victoria South as Swanhilda. Victoria is destined for Warrington in September for further dance study at the Kate Simmons School.

Fellow student Alex Dykes is to join Phil Winston’s Theatre Works in Blackpool, where she will undertake training in musical theatre at the school at which Twinnie-Lee Moore took her next steps after leaving Miss Dunn en route to starring as Velma Kelly in the national tour of Chicago at the Grand Opera House last month.

Other dances tomorrow include children aged three to six in Bo-Peep And Her Sheep, a dance arranged by two of the older students, Heather and Sarah Stead. By way of contrast, the older girls perform Bach’s Air On A G String and Debussy’s Arabesque with Kirsty Higgins and Natalie Hervert to the fore. Among the musical theatre numbers will be Popular from Wicked, Under The Sea from The Little Mermaid and April Showers, while three of the youngest children’s classes will be joining together to present their tutu ballet to music from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.

“Many other dances complete the programme to give a very varied show,” says Miss Dunn, who will donate proceeds from Dance Flash 2009 to Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa.

“Over the past four years, we have managed to give them more than £6,000 from our shows,” she notes.
