The writers of Hood – The Musical will travel to York next Saturday to see Flying Ducks Youth Theatre perform the show they bill as “the story of Robin Hood with a rock edge”.

Set in 12th century England, Andy Brown and Steve Williamson’s musical will tell the fable of Robin Hood to the accompaniment of catchy songs and lively dancing at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from Thursday to Saturday.

“Hood – The Musical provides the opportunity for a new and challenging production,” says Steve Outhwaite, director of the Haxby company, whose 50-strong membership ranges in age from 11 to 18.

Steve set up Flying Ducks 12 years ago, and his young performers rehearse each week for an annual production.

“They always want to perform something new and I struggle to find a show to meet their demands each year. I’m delighted that the group will perform the northern premiere of Andy and Steve’s entertaining and unusual musical.”

The cast will be led by Rob Joyce in the role of Robin Hood, Dan Killen as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Harriet Sissons as Maid Marian and James Wright as Friar Tuck.

Looking forward to presenting the regional premiere, Steve says: “The script is both comic and romantic with dramatic fight scenes and strong character parts, and it’s definitely a show for all the family.”

Flying Ducks will be seeking to match the sell-out success of last year’s show, High School Musical, in next week’s 7.30pm performances and 2.30pm Saturday matinee.
