THE glamour and spectacle of Bollywood arrives at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds, for the summer with the staging of Bollywood Jane from tomorrow until June 30.

Written by Amanda Whittington, directed by Nikolai Foster and choreographed by Zoobin Surty, this bittersweet drama will feature Bollywood sequences brought to life through song-and-dance numbers performed by a 20 strong community chorus of Yorkshire performers, including dancers from Zoobin's Bollywood classes in York.

Whittington has chosen to relocate the play to Bradford from the Midlands for its West Yorkshire Playhouse run following its original premiere at the Leicester Haymarket in 2003.

From June 7 to 10, Yorkshire also plays host to the 2007 International Indian Film Awards (IIFA), and Bollywood Jane forms part of the Fringe Festival for this international event.

Leeds-born actress Nichola Burley makes her stage debut at 20 in the lead role of disenchanted teenager Jane, who discovers that the romance, music and extravagance of Bollywood cinema can provide a fantastical alternative to her monotonous life with single mum Kate.

A stranger in a new town, Jane has the chance to work at a local cinema, and as she immerses herself in the wild, vibrant heart of Bollywood with her newly discovered friend Dini, her arguments with her mother and her unhappiness are swept aside.

The Bollywood sequences feature original footage and music from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, one of the highest-earning Indian films of all time, which has entered its 600th week of a continuous run at a cinema in Mumbai.

Audiences also will be treated to snippets of Bollywood blockbusters during the interval.
