Mexican actress Lupita Tovar, who starred in the Spanish Dracula film (1931), has died at the age of 106.

The star, who also acted in one of the country’s first ever sound films, Santa (1932), passed away in Los Angeles on Friday.

For 56 years Lupita was married to the agent and producer Paul Kohner, father of Imitation Of Life star Susan Kohner, and her grandchildren, Chris and Paul Weitz, are both Oscar-nominated film makers.

Her death was officially confirmed on Monday by her screenwriter grandson Chris, but her niece, actress Lucy Tovar, posted a Facebook tribute on Saturday:

Lucy Tovar – Desde ayer me siento muy triste y en especial… | Facebook

She wrote: “Since yesterday I have felt sad and especially this afternoon because my aunt, Lupita Tovar, has passed away. She was a grand woman and she is now resting and, though we know that the person who leaves us is in a better place, it is very hard to let go someone you love. Rest in peace.”

Although it was a separate film, the Spanish-language Dracula was shot concurrently with the acclaimed black-and-white Bela Lugosi version, even using the same set at night.

It was recently listed in the The National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as a “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant film.
