One Direction fans have united with followers of 5 Second of Summer to co-opt a hashtag that began trending ahead of a controversial interview with the Australian rockers in Rolling Stone magazine.

The hashtag #5SOSIsDeadParty was believed to have started with fans of rival band Fifth Harmony to celebrate what they believed was the break down of 5SOS after their fandom was left in turmoil over comments made by the members about sleeping with fans.

Extracts from the interview included 5SOS frontman Luke Hemmings discussing sleeping with “multiple girls in one night” while bassist Calum Hood joked about making a sex tape after nude pictures of him were released on snapchat.

Gleeful Harmonisers – fans of Fifth Harmony – appear to have started #5SOSIsDeadParty in celebration of the disharmony the quotes sparked among the 5SOS fandom.

But those who remain loyal to the Aussie four-piece have united with One Direction fans to support the band online and reclaim the hashtag for themselves.

They seem to be particularly upset about Harmonisers mentioning member Ashton Irwin’s history of self harm and his father leaving the family.

Very quickly the fandoms came together to adopt #5SOSIsDeadParty for themselves.

The interview that caused outrage will appear in the January issue of Rolling Stone.

One section from the interview reads: “‘When you put four young dudes on a tour bus, playing theatres, then arenas, you’re going to have sex with a lot of girls, I guess,’ says Hemmings. ‘We had a good time.’

“Multiple girls in one night? ‘I feel like I shouldn’t say,’ he says with a smirk. ‘You could say the possibility of that is high.’ Multiple girls at the same time? ‘The possibility is high,’ he says again. He cracks a devilish grin. ‘The possibilities are endless’.”

In a line from Calum, he jokes that he will make a sex tape to capitalise on the rise in the band’s profile that followed when a nude image of him was released online.

“Now I’m just working on the sex tape. I’ll call Pamela up, like, ‘Hey, it’s been a while. We really need to hype this band up!’” he said.

Band member Michael Clifford is the only member to have publicly made a comment so far, welcoming fan support.
