NEXT Saturday will mark the start of the 2012 York Late Music series of Living Composers, Performed Live concerts with pianist Richard Casey and cellist Simon Turner’s recital at York Unitarian Chapel, St Saviourgate, York.

The 7.30pm programme on March 3 will celebrate the birthdays of former Late Music artistic director David Power, 50, and fellow composers David Lumsdaine, 80, and Philip Glass, 75.

Power’s Mosaic, Lumsdaine’s solo cello work Blue Upon Blue and Glass’s solo piano pieces Metamorphosis II and Metamorphosis III will be complemented by Estonian composer Arvo Part’s Fratres, Nicola LeFanu’s cello work Prelude, a Late Music commission by Anthony Gilbert and a rare outing for Elliott Carter’s Sonata for Cello and Piano.

At the other end of the age spectrum, a new work by 17-year-old York College student Nicholas Harbourne will be premiered.

Tickets cost £10, concessions £8, on the door and composer Anthony Gilbert will give a pre-concert talk at 6.45pm, in advance of the first performance of his new work, Rapprochement.

Earlier in the day, York Late Music will welcome back third-year York St John University performance students for a lunchtime recital in the chapel. The 1pm programme will comprise solo and ensemble works, original compositions and improvised performances. Admission is free.
