COMEDY was as much to the fore as music in the baggy heyday of Madness. When the band’s frontman and all round diamond-geezer, Suggs, delivered his lines with glint of mischief and a hint of vaudeville, you always knew he could teach many a stand-up a thing or two about comic timing.

As indeed he does in Live Suggs, which comes to the Grand Opera House, York early next year.

This evening with the Ska-master promises an emotional rollercoaster ride through 30 years in music, radio, television and the pie and mash industry. Not to mention the day he turned 50, the cat died and his kids left home.

He reflects on childhood chaos, the trappings of success and the druggie father he never knew.

Yet his cheeky-chappie persona is never far away, and he promises to end the evening by breaking into Baggy Trousers or It Must Be Love.

• Live Suggs, Grand Opera House, York, January 26 at 8pm. Tickets cost £20.50 and are available on on 0844 871 3024 or at atgtickets.
