Calling all musicians! From Tuesday, the Arts Barge Project in York is offering you the opportunity to learn how to play “some of the world’s most exciting music” and perform it in the large Arts Bargestra ensemble in venues across York and beyond this summer.

In addition you will acquire a free weekend ticket to August’s Forest of Galtres Festival, where you are guaranteed to take part in a gig on stage.

“The Arts Barge crew are looking for instrumentalists of all abilities who want to play great music together; learn new skills, musicianship and improvising techniques; how to groove together in a band and how to make a great show,” says Arts Barge co-founder Marcia Mackey.

“The musicians will perform at the Grand Opera House as part of The Arts Barge Story on June 18 and al fresco at York’s Festival of Rivers and the Arts Barge River Party in July, as well as Galtres Festival.”

Richard Ormrod, a multi-instrumentalist with 15 years’ experience in running workshops, will lead the Bargestra in a course of eight evening workshops, beginning on Tuesday.

“We’ll be playing the finest sounds from around the globe,” he says. “I’ll tailor every piece to fit the musicians in the project, so no matter what your experience or musical ability, you can be a part of The Arts Bargestra 2011!

“There’ll be a gamut of styles and a wealth of upbeat international tunes from South Africa, the Balkans, Japan, Jamaica, Brazil, India, Cuba, Ethiopia and Trinidad.”

All abilities and most ages are welcome, 11 and upwards to be precise. “Get on board,” says Richard. “It’s a massive bargain for an unforgettable experience and probably the biggest fun you’ve had in ages: £120 for 13 sessions, including eight workshops, at least five performances and a free weekend ticket to the Galtres Festival (value £65), and best of all, you're in it!”
