Dogan Mehmet & The Deerhunters will headline the Acoustic Gathering V bill at Peasholm Park, North Bay, Scarborough, on Sunday, September 12.

Organised by Steve Dickinson for the fifth consecutive year, this not-for-profit event will run from noon to 10.30pm with a line-up that will include Leeds guitarist John Gomm. A full supporting cast of locally sourced talent will be announced soon.

“Booking Dogan Mehmet is a real coup for Acoustic Gathering,” says Steve.

“His particular style is unique and should be a fitting headliner on what is our fifth birthday; it should be a great day”

Brighton born and bred, Dogan is a second-generation Turkish Cypriot with both sides of his family from the island. “His heritage forms a big part of his musical identity, alongside his love for English traditional music and the rich cultural heritage of Brighton and the Sussex coast,” says Steve, introducing the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards finalist.

“Dogan excels on fiddle, guitar, melodeon and tenor guitar as well as a variety of Turkish instruments in a wide cross-section of styles from jazz and funk to soul and indie rock. With his big band, he cleverly fuses Anglo-Turkish gipsy-punk styles in a mix of traditions and strong acoustic grooves.”

On the back of his first British tour, Dogan and The Deerhunters have finished working with producer and musician Tom Wright on his debut album, Gypsyhead.

Alongside Dogan, further attractions at Acoustic Gathering V will be family activities, on-site bar and catering facilities and market stalls. Admission is free.
